These are my wing spars. If you are or have been a "Ragwing" plans builder you probably
have noticed that these spars are a little different. When I started this project, my goal was not
to build a "103" type aircraft, instead I am building more in line with a "Light Sport" aircraft which
I believe requires more strength. My spars started with 1" X 3/4" spruce members.
Using a "Dado" blade, I made 1/4" notches so I could install my enlarged inside 3/4" x 3/4" members.
This made a very strong joint. For the front spars, I then cut to fit 3/4" X 3/4" cross members
and glued into place. I don't know how strong the original design was but these suckers are beefy!
This photo will give you greater detail if you click to enlarge. The dark areas on the 2 rear
spars is due to the builder, "ME", getting ahead of the written instructions and gluing the plywood doublers in place before
I was supposed to. Lucky for me I use slow setting Epoxy and I was able to pry these parts off before it was too
late.
This is "Casey" the dog in his "I want a cookie" pose. He has been with me in the garage every
day of the build so far. He gets the first ride!!
